Are you planning to travel with the nanny this summer? Here are 4 things you need to know if you are considering bringing the nanny along on your family vacation.

1. It may be your family’s vacation, but it’s a work trip for the nanny. If you’re considering bringing the nanny on your family’s vacation it’s likely because you know it will make your vacation exponentially more enjoyable. Let’s face it, a vacation with small children and no childcare is a “trip” NOT a vacation. Your nanny will be there working so that you can actually have a vacation.
2. Compensation: The nanny must be paid for hours worked. By law, anything over 40 hours considered overtime (paid at 1.5x their hourly rate).  It is a big expense to bring the nanny. But even if you are taking them to a beautiful destination, a ”free vacation” does not equal pay for working during your trip.
3. Schedule: Set a general work schedule ahead of time. Will they keep their regular hours? Or do you want to adjust it so that you can go out to dinner or have coverage on the weekends?
4. Expenses: Their travel, lodging, and meals should be covered.
