Every time a client or nanny calls to say how happy they are with our service, I can’t help but feel good. I want to spread the cheer. Who doesn’t like to be praised? So I am advocating more praise. Not for your kids but for the adults who take care of them. Any one who spends 8 to 10 hours a day taking care of your children certainly needs to hear how much you appreciate them. It has nothing to do with the fact that you pay this person a salary to do the job. This gesture costs you not a dime and the good feelings that will be engendered by your words will go a long way. Taking time to notice a job well done makes people want to do a good job.
Over the years, I have heard from too many nannies that they never hear a thank you. It hurts them to the core. I have also heard of employers who never once ask how the nanny’s children are. As if the only children in the world are theirs. Taking care of kids is a truly demanding job— ask any working parent. After a week-end at home with their children, most parents will acknowledge that their office job is a lot easier. Last week was Nanny Recognition Week. Let’s not only have one week a year to recognize those who love and care for your children.
